What do people think of the fact that receptive anal sex is linked to an increased risk of anal cancer?

I love playing with my girlfriend's ass but I wouldn't want to do anything that compromises her future health!

You do realise that the same HPV will cause cervical cancer to? I'm curious if it is if the HPV vaccine that has been developed would be preventative for anal cancer too. If I were you and very concerned about this I would do more research on HPV. From the little I know about it as long as you're both monogamous and don't go completely nuts the risk in minimal.
But I could be wrong and it's usually a bad idea to take medical advice from a message board, unless that advice is to see a doctor.
It's all about risk assesment. There are risks involved with every sex act. You and your partner just have to decide which risks you're willing to take.
It is worth noting that the issue here is not at all a risk associated with "receptive anal sex" but rather a risk associated with the contraction of the HPV through receptive anal sex.
In other words, the risk lies not in the act, but rather in the STD status (weather or not an HPV carrier) of the "giver".
There is no correlation between anal cancer rates and anal sex alone (between healthy partners). Only between anal cancer rates and persons who have contracted the HPV through receptive anal sex.
Yet another reason to always play it safe when you're playing with a new partner or one who's STD status you are not 100% sure of.

True, no correlation for healthy people.
A note about "playing it safe" though and HPV. Condoms are minimally effective with HPV as it's transmitted via skin contact and not fluid transmission. In addition, it's hard to ever be 100% sure of anyone's STD status, especially for men, and especially for HPV. Men are usually only diagnosed visually, so if they're asymptomatic (which is quite common) they won't be diagnosed and won't know their own status. Women have a slight advantage in that pap smears can detect abnormalities caused by HPV (cervically and vaginally).
I know that anal swabs can be done for HPV, my friend participated in a study and had that done, but I don't think it's routine. Urge your girlfriend to get regular paps and, if you can (your gf too), be honest with your doctor about your sexual activity so that s/he can be as thorough as possible in caring for you.

That's pretty much what I thought - just wanted to see what other people felt. There is a the possibility that either of us could have HPV as we've has other partners prior to meeting each other (i've had warts before and had them removed, but I think that's a different strain). However, it sounds like a smear should address the risk.

My advice would be to stay monogamous to her, and use condoms until you've both been tested for all STDs and come out negative. If you decide to have unprotected anal sex with her and ejaculate in her ass then you definitely gotta make sure you're not messing with anyone else on the side, and most importantly you gotta make sure she's being monogamous as well.
